History of the University of Indonesia (UI)

The forerunner of the UI began with the School of Health and Vaccine Sciences (Opleiding van eleves voor de genes-en helkunde en vaccines) in 1849 based on the Decree of the Governor of the Netherlands East Indies. At that time, the Dutch colonial government set up a school intended to obtain additional doctor assistants.

In 1864, the education program was added to three years, and in 1875 to 7 years. The title given was changed to become a Medical Doctor.

After Indonesian independence was declared on August 17, 1945, the Republic of Indonesia Higher Education Agency (BPTRI) was established on August 19, 1945 in Jakarta. BPTRI has two faculties (Medical Colleges and Law / Literature Colleges). The Chairman of BPTRI is Prof. Dr. Sarwono Prawirohardjo. The Medical College was officially opened on October 1, 1945.

The name Nood Universiteit was changed to Universiteit van Indonesie (UVI). Finally, after Jakarta was taken back, the government returned the BPTRI to Jakarta and returned it to Universiteit van Indonesie, and borrowed the new name Universiteit Indonesia (UI).

In 2008, Universitas Indonesia won the Indonesian ICT award for Smart Campus with the Best Content and Applications. For the Accessibility and Connectivity category, the University of Indonesia also received the Merit Award.
